Welcome to Rancho High School's Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, also known as AFJROTC or simply JROTC. Established in 1968, Rancho's program is the oldest Air Force JROTC unit in the state of Nevada and is part of the school's Career and Technical Education (CTE) curriculum as Military Science.
At no time are instructors or cadets (students) allowed to engage in hazing of any other person in JROTC. Hazing is defined as any activity that humiliates, degrades, or endangers someone as part of joining or participating in a group. These actions can include using physical activity as a punishment, engaging in improper mental or social abuses, or engaging in any action that subjects a person to physical, mental, or social harm. JROTC is a citzenship program, with the mission of "Developing citizens of character." JROTC is not a military recruiting program, and cadets are never under any requirement to join the military. The purpose of the program is to educate high school cadets in citizenship, to promote community service, and to instill the personality traits of responsibility, character, and self-discipline. The program achieves this through classroom education in air and space fundamentals and hands-on learning opportunities in a number of fun and challenging extra-curricular activities. JROTC is grounded in the Air Force's Core Values of “Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do.” As such, we use many of the ideas, and strategies used by today's military to instill pride, teamwork, loyalty, self-discipline and leadership. The program has more more than 90,000 cadets in more than 880 high schools world-wide. More than 1,900 retired Air Force officers and NCOs comprise the instructor corps, which leads, mentors, guides, and teaches the cadets JROTC's time-tested curriculum of leadership, academics, fitness, and more.
Since 2019, all JROTC programs have been certified by the Nevada Depratment of Education as Military Science Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Students will learn the skills necessary in any workplace setting and will also learn specific topics and ideas to earn a College and Career Ready endorsement on their high school diploma. What we are NOT: JROTC is not a military recruiting pipeline. We do not require ANY student to join the military in any way. We are not a behavior modification program, to the extent that JROTC would be seen as punishment for poor behavior in other parts of school settings. We are not a military "boot Camp" or basic military training with instructors yelling at students or using physical exericise as punishment.

All Rancho students, regardless of year in school, are eligible to join JROTC. Middle-school students coming to Rancho should see their school counselor. Students already at Rancho should do the same or speak directly with a JROTC instructor, who can help facilitate the process.

Las Vegas Veterans Day Parade The annual Las Vegas Veterans Day Parade will be on November 11, 2026. Rancho AFJROTC cadets are expected to participate in this event and their participation is counted as a Summative Assessment of their marching abilities and uniform wear. We will meet at the corner of 3rd Street and Garces Avenue starting at 8:30 a.m. and expect to begin marching shortly after 10:00 a.m. Parents are encouraged to watch the parade along 4th Street and support their JROTC cadets. After the parade, parents may pick up their students near the Mob Museum on Stewart Avenue.
